WebScreen Right to Repair

Why We Stand with the Right to Repair: Our WebScreen Teardown on iFixit

At HW Lab, we believe that technology should be accessible, repairable, and hackable. Our mission with WebScreen has always been to create an open-source, fully customizable gadget that empowers users—not locks them into a closed ecosystem. That’s why we teamed up with iFixit to publish a teardown guide for WebScreen, ensuring that anyone can disassemble, repair, and modify their device with ease.

But this goes beyond WebScreen—it's about the Right to Repair and why it matters.

The Right to Repair: A Movement We Fully Support

The Right to Repair movement advocates for consumers having access to spare parts, repair guides, and the ability to fix their devices without unnecessary barriers. Many manufacturers actively discourage repairs, using proprietary screws, software locks, or withholding crucial repair information. This forces users to either pay for costly repairs or replace their devices entirely, contributing to e-waste and making technology less sustainable.

The good news? Legislation is changing. The European Parliament last year passed new Right to Repair rules, requiring manufacturers to provide repair services even after warranties expire. These policies push for better access to spare parts and repair guides, and they prevent companies from blocking third-party or DIY repairs

We strongly believe that repairability should be the standard, not the exception. That’s why WebScreen is built with open-source principles at its core—ensuring users have complete control over their devices.

Tearing Down WebScreen: A Guide for Everyone

When we launched WebScreen, we knew we wanted to provide full transparency into its design. That’s why we wrote a detailed teardown guide on iFixit, where we break down:

How WebScreen is assembled
How to safely take it apart and reassemble it
How each component works

This isn't just about fixing a broken device—it's about learning, experimenting, and modifying. We want our users to feel confident hacking, upgrading, and customizing WebScreen to fit their unique needs.

A Call to Action: Demand Repairable Tech

We hope that by supporting repairability, we can inspire more hardware creators to prioritize open, user-friendly designs. If you're tired of disposable electronics, here’s how you can help:

🔹 Support open-source and repairable products—choose devices that value your freedom as a user.
🔹 Push for Right to Repair laws—vote with your wallet and back policies that promote repairability.
🔹 Learn how to fix your gadgets—use resources like iFixit to gain repair skills and keep your devices running longer.

We’re proud to stand with iFixit and the Right to Repair movement—because hardware should be yours to own, fix, and improve.
